Spoiler-filled Synopsis: Agnes Wilkins is a young woman living in Regency England. This summer she is coming out into society. Whereas most young women looked forward to coming out, Agnes did not. Agnes is what most people back then would have called a Bluestocking. She enjoyed reading, particularly Jane Austen who was known in that day only as “a Lady.”In addition, Agnes could speak several languages fluently. Anges’ mother is determined that she shall marry very well and has sent her sights on Lord Showalter as a potential spouse. And this is where is all begins.
Lord Showalter, like many men of his station, fancies himself as a bit of an archeologist. Also like many men in his station, he feel little to no scruples about removing artifacts from the Middle East to England. One night Lord Showalter decides to throw a fashionable mummy unwrapping party. His guests get to keep any of the artifacts they uncover. Agnes does uncover an unusual object, for some reason, she is more than a little hesitant to show the crowd. She hides it in her bodice during all the excitement. Then a man at the party is murdered. To top the evening off, it turns out that the guests are unwrapping the “wrong” mummy. Everyone but Agnes returns the trinkets. The next night one of the guests house is broken into and the person injured. Then another guest’s house is burgled. Soon society is aflame with discussion of the “mummy’s curse.” As Agnes begins to look closely at the trinket she’s won, she realizes that she’s unwrapped a Bonapartist plot. So it is up to Agnes and her partner Caedmon to find an ancient weapon before the Bonapartists can use it against England.
Bluestocking’s Learned Opinion: I really did enjoy reading this book!! It was very much like Y.S. Lee’s The Agency: A Spy in the House and The Body at the Tower. Parts of this book, I will admit, were a little bit predictable. Despite this, it was an enjoyable read.
